Child Marriage

Girls have a right to wait until they are grown to marry and to take part in the choice of a spouse. (CEDAW Article 16)  Like the topics of bodily integrity and trafficking and prostitution the early marriage of girls is a testament to their lack of autonomy and say in the course of their lives.  Girls must be allowed to wait until they are adults before they marry and have a say in their choice of spouse.

What is the Solution?

The solution to the problem of child marriage is multifaceted.  Countries are using marriage registries, also birth registry so girls ages will be accurately known.  Creation of minimum marriage age laws, enforcement of existing laws, and schooling for girls are all part of the solution.
